Spotify Canvas size and specs

Updated 17 August 2026

Canvas is the short looping visual that plays behind a track on the Spotify Now Playing screen. The requirements are narrow and strictly validated, so getting them exactly right saves a round of rejected uploads.

The specification

Aspect ratio9:16 vertical
Dimensions720 x 1280 minimum, 1080 x 1920 maximum
Length3 to 8 seconds (strictly enforced)
FormatMP4 or JPG
AudioNone — Canvas plays silently under the track
LoopingLoops continuously while the song plays

The 8-second limit is not approximate

Length is where most rejections happen. Three seconds is the floor and eight is the ceiling, and Spotify enforces both exactly — an 8.5 second clip fails validation rather than being trimmed for you. Cut to a round seven seconds if you want margin without losing much loop.

Make the loop seamless

Canvas repeats for as long as the track plays, which can be several minutes. A visible seam at the loop point becomes steadily more irritating on the twentieth repeat than it seemed on the first. Either match the last frame to the first, or choose motion with no obvious start and end — a slow drift, a rotation, a waveform that never resolves to silence.

Resolution: aim at the floor, not the ceiling

720 x 1280 and 1080 x 1920 both pass, and both are re-encoded by Spotify for delivery. The larger export gains you very little on a phone screen at this size, and the smaller one uploads faster. Aspect ratio is the part that must be exact; pixel count has latitude.

Using a waveform as a Canvas

A waveform loop is one option and it suits instrumental or beat-driven tracks, though most Canvases are artwork or footage rather than audio visualisation. If you want to try it, the visualizer on this site exports 9:16 at 1080 x 1920 — exactly the Canvas maximum — or 720 x 1280, which is exactly the minimum. Either passes. Trim your source to a 3–8 second segment before rendering, since the export length matches the audio length.

One caveat worth knowing: our exports always include an AAC audio track, because they are built for platforms that require one. Canvas ignores audio and plays silently, so this is normally harmless — but if an upload is refused, stripping the audio stream is the first thing to try.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Spotify Canvas?
Vertical 9:16, between 720x1280 and 1080x1920 pixels. Both ends of that range pass Spotify validation.
How long can a Spotify Canvas be?
Between 3 and 8 seconds. The limit is strict — a clip of 8.5 seconds is rejected.
Does a Spotify Canvas have sound?
No. Canvas is purely visual and plays silently while your track continues. Any audio in the uploaded file is ignored.
What file formats does Spotify Canvas accept?
MP4 video or JPG still image. MOV, GIF, PNG and WebM are not accepted.
